A visit to the Pompompurin Cafe

Cute Cube Harajuku opened in 2014 and is a whole world of cuteness. It's a 3 storey complex housing shops and cafes for the kawaii obsessed and one of it's star attractions is the Pom Pom Purin Cafe on the third floor.

For those of you not already acquainted Pom Pom Purin is a beret wearing Golden Retriever character created by Sanrio with a following in Asia, not quite on the scale of Hello Kitty yet but he is very popular. I think he is certainly one of the cutest characters and was desperate to visit the cafe for my birthday.

To get to Cute Cube you can take the JR Yamanote Line to Harajuku, then take the Takeshita Exit, cross the road and walk down Takeshita Dori, the cafe is approximately a 4 minute walk down the hill on the right. The building is easy to spot and looks like this from the front:

It also has a pretty trendy octopus on the roof:

I'd read that the queues for the cafe were very long and to expect waits of around an hour so we chose to do our visit at 11am on a Wednesday in a bid to avoid the crowds. We took the lift to the third floor and joined a small queue of 3 separate parties outside of the cafe (for info there were no children in the line just females aged 20-25). In my opinion character cafes are certainly not just for children and Japan echoes this sentiment.

We only waited about 5 minutes before we were seated and I for one was very excited!

The cafe is so pretty inside down to every little detail:

We even had special 20th anniversary placemats:

As it was my birthday I ordered for both of us and obviously went for the two cutest meals on the menu and a caramel latte. We ordered from the Japanese menu but there are English versions available if you need one. The latte arrived first and looked like this:

It actually tasted like heaven and was so pretty that Tom could hardly contain his excitement:

My meal was a ‘picnic set’ and was very tasty, it included a pancetta and camembert bagel, eggs benedict, a salad and some other little hidden items:

Tom’s meal was from the monthly specials menu and was a thai curry with rice, although we didn't realise this when we ordered as I was overwhelmed by how pretty it was! Tom is not a big fan of thai curry I ended up eating most of it but it did taste very good.

We had a great time at the cafe, the food although not Tom's cup of tea was very tasty and it's so cute that the taste really doesn't matter!
