The challenges of a year abroad in Japan

Cultural differences - a puzzle I want to solve

Japan is known for its traditions, its polite reserve and its strong sense of community. As someone from Germany, where directness is often paramount, there are bound to be moments when I ask myself, ‘Did I just do something wrong?’ Whether it's about showing someone respect without overstepping the mark or simply how to behave properly in a queue, the intricacies of Japanese culture are exciting but also intimidating.

But I see this as an exciting task: learning how to move around in a society that works so differently and, if possible, not putting my foot in my mouth.

Language barrier - a challenge that needs to be overcome

To be honest, my Japanese still has a lot of room for improvement. Sure, I know a few phrases, but when it comes to having a longer conversation? That's where it gets more difficult. Many Japanese hardly speak any English, so communication is bound to be frustrating at times. But I know that it's exactly these situations that make me grow. Finding your way around a foreign language is not only helpful, but also gives you a good feeling once you've mastered it.

Homesickness - the silent companion

There's no need to sugarcoat it: Homesickness is part of it. Especially in a country that is so different, you can quickly feel lonely. The way the Japanese tend to approach strangers in a distanced manner certainly doesn't make it any easier. I know that there will be times when I feel strange and isolated, and that won't be easy. But I think it's an experience that will teach me a lot about myself.

The opportunities of a year abroad in Japan

Personal growth through every challenge

A year in Japan will change me, I'm sure of that. The independence you gain from finding your way around a foreign country on your own is priceless. It is an opportunity to see yourself from a new perspective and to grow. Overcoming these challenges will show me what I can really achieve, and that's what makes it so special.

New perspectives and friendships

Whether it's joining a sports club or living in a different culture on a daily basis, Japan will give me the chance to socialise and make friends that I would never have experienced otherwise. Even though it might be difficult at first, I know that these connections will make my year unforgettable.

A cultural feast for all the senses

The chance to experience so many unique things - from historic temples to traditional festivals to futuristic metropolises - is simply unbeatable for me. And then, of course, the food: I can't wait to try ramen, sushi or okonomiyaki in places that are a far cry from what I know from Europe. These culinary experiences are just as exciting for me as the encounters with the people and their culture.

Why I am embarking on this adventure

A year abroad is not a holiday, but a real challenge. But that's exactly what appeals to me. I don't just want to be a tourist who gets to know a country superficially, but really immerse myself in everyday life and get involved with all the ups and downs. I'm ready to break out of my comfort zone and experience Japan with open eyes and an open heart - no matter what.
